The Community Based Health Project (CBHP) is a grassroots development program which places community health workers at the centre of health care and health education in villages in rural India. It is modelled on the Comprehensive Rural Health Project, Jamkhed model of primary health. Dr Moses Kharat is the founder and director of CBHP which is based in Buldana, Maharashtra. Dr Moses' plan is for a network of volunteer community health workers to form the backbone of the health system, with community involvement at all levels of decision making and project implementation. The goals of CBHP are to reduce malnutrition, create a supportive program promoting the health and well-being of adolescent girls and to provide basic curative services such as emergencies to the community. www.communitybasedhealthproject.org

With Photovoice, Kaiser Permanente puts cameras into the hands of community residents so they can document the barriers to healthy eating and active living in their own communities. By creating a visual record of the environmental conditions in their neighborhoods, residents identify opportunities for community change, help set priorities, and act as advocates for change with city officials, policy makers, and legislators. Photovoice is being implemented in at least nine Kaiser Permanente communities to lift up residents' voices and create change.

The Hispanic Community Health Study / Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL) is a multi-center epidemiologic study of 16000 Hispanic/Latino participants in four US cities: New York, Chicago, Miami, and San Diego. The study will determine the role that adopting cultural practices of the US has on the prevalence and development of disease, and will identify risk factors playing a protective or harmful role in Hispanics/Latinos. The study is sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI www.cscc.unc.edu ) and six other institutes, centers, and offices of the National Institutes of Health (NIH www.cscc.unc.edu ).

Only by having those in need speak for themselves can we truly know whether any charity, aid, and development is being done well or merely being marketed well. All aid beneficiary responses (ie Bangladeshi mothers who received help from Community Health Volunteers) were unscripted and direct testimonials.
